Training Standards

IAADP Minimum Training Standards, ADI Public Access Test checklist, ADA legal framework, and handler responsibilities for service dog deployment.

IAADP Minimum Training Standards

The International Association of Assistance Dog Partners (IAADP) establishes the minimum training standards for assistance dogs. These standards are used as the benchmark for Benny's training program.

Minimum Training Hours
120 Hours

Minimum formal training over 6+ months per IAADP Standards. Does NOT include informal socialization or home training. Formal training before 6 months of age does NOT count toward this total.

Public Access Hours
30+ Hours

At least 30 of the 120 hours must be in public access environments — stores, restaurants, transportation, medical facilities, etc.

Training Duration
6+ Months

Training must span at least 6 months. Intensive short-term programs do not meet this standard. Giant breeds typically require 18–24 months.

Task Training
3+ Tasks

Dog must be trained to perform at least 3 tasks that directly mitigate the handler's disability. Tasks must be specific, trained, and demonstrable.

Behavioral Standards

No aggressive behavior toward people or animals
No excessive barking or vocalization in public
No soliciting food or attention from strangers
No sniffing merchandise or people without permission
No eliminating in public except on command in appropriate areas
No pulling on leash or rushing through doors
Maintains controlled behavior in all public environments
Responds reliably to handler cues under distraction
